Liverpool are the frontrunners in the race to land Toby Alderweireld after the Belgium international gave the green light to a possible summer move to Anfield.
Manchester United, Everton and Newcastle are amongst a
number of Premier League clubs believed to be interested in the highly-rated
Ajax defender.
But the 24-year-old, who could cost up to £8million, told
Belgium paper Het Laatste Nieuws: "I do not want to play in an English
club to mid-table. Unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my criteria."
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been searching for a
new defender, with Jamie Carragher retiring at the end of the season.
The club have been regular visitors to Amsterdam in recent
months and have been tracking midfielder Christian Eriksen but Alderweireld is
also a player who would fit the criteria of those that the Fenway Sports Group,
the club's American owners, like to sign.
Alderweireld has been capped 23 times by his country and has
played for Ajax since 2008 after joining them from Beerschot.
He scored a late winner against Manchester United at Old
Trafford to clinch a 2-1 win for Ajax in the second leg of the last 32 of last
season's Europa League, but the Dutch side still went out 3-2 on aggregate.
