On This Day - 1959

After a shaky start to the season, Phil Taylor resigns as Liverpool manager after being unable to lead the club back to Division One. Taylor left on a losing note as his side crumbled to a 4-2 defeat against Lincoln City at Sincil Bank. The former Liverpool defender, who joined the club as inside-forward when signed from Bristol Rovers for by George Patterson, believes the strain of trying to gain promotion was what led to him stepping down as manager.

On This Day - 1956

Avi Cohen is born in Cairo, Egypt. He joins Liverpool in 1979 for a fee of £200,000 from Maccabi Tel-Aviv, becoming the first Israeli to play in England. Unfortunately, he is never able to get a run in the team, and is released in 1981 after making just 18 league appearances in two seasons with club. Cohen dies aged just 54 in 2010 following a motorcycle accident.

On This Day - 1974

Terry McDermott signs from Newcastle United. The midfielder goes on to become an integral part of the clubs engine room after two seasons on the fringes of the first team. In 1980 he wins PFA Players’ Player of the Year and Football Writers’ awards, becoming the first player to receive both in the same year.

On This Day - 1998

Roy Evans resigns after joint management with Gerard Houllier proves to be unsuccessful. Evans won 116 of his 226 games in charge of Liverpool, and guided the club to fourth place in the Premier League and to a League Cup triumph in his first full season at the helm.

On This Day - 1984

Jim Beglin makes his Liverpool debut over a year after signing for the club for £20,000 from Shamrock Rovers. He starts on the left-hand side of midfield in a league game against Southampton. He eventually makes his left full-back his own under the management of Kenny Dalglish, going on to play 98 league games for the club, before breaking his leg, costing him a place in the side.

On This Day - 1907

Liverpool defeat the country’s oldest professional club 6-0 when Notts County are the unfortunate visitors to Anfield for this First Division clash. Striker Joe Hewitt hits three of the 79 goals he scored during his Liverpool career, whilst being ably assisted by Bill McPherson, Charles Hewitt and Robbie Robinson, netting a goal each.

On This Day - 1975

Liverpool get the better of Manchester United at Anfield. Their bitter rivals are not up to the task in front of 49,136 fans, as Liverpool run out 3-1 victors. Steve Heighway scored the first for the Reds, before Welshman John Toshack, and Kevin Keegan, get one goal each in the second half. The win puts Bob Paisley’s men above United and just one point behind leaders West Ham.

On This Day - 1963

Gerry and the Pacemakers’ You’ll Never Walk Alone reaches number one in the UK charts. This is the first week of four that it will spend in the top position. In that time it will be adopted by The KOP as its unofficial anthem.

On This Day - 1920

The Reds travel to Goodison Park and overcome their rivals with a 3-0 win. Dick Johnson scores one, and Harry Chambers finds the net either side of half-time, to complete a comprehensive win in front of 55,000 devastated Toffees fans.
