Description:
Formed on
May 25, 1901 as a merger of La Rosales and Santa Rosa. "After several
comings and goings, the name River Plate was chosen. The reason was that while
Dock Nº 3 was being built, Martinez had seen some sailors leaving some huge
boxes aside (what they contained was a mystery for everyone) and started
playing with the ball during their spare time. What drew Martinez´s attention
most was the inscription on the boxes - The River Plate." This is the
Anglicization of the Rio de La Plata, the river that Buenos Aires is located
on. Originally based in the Boca district of Buenos Aires, but moved northward
to the Núñez district, a more upscale location. Their nickname Los Millonarios
comes from a record transfer fee the club paid in the 1930s. In 2010–11 River
Plate was relegated to Nacional B for the first time in the clubs history.
River won the to Nacional B title and returned to Primera División to play the
2012-13 season. Somewhat incredibly, despite having won a record 33 league
titles, River once endured an 18-year title drought. La Banda (The Stripe)
nickname is a reference to their striped sash jersey. The stadium is named
after a former club president.
